I mean with a camera? And then you had to have them developed? And you had to wait a week or maybe even an hour?

This week I would like to celebrate a simpler time when we actually took the time to think about what we were photographing and didn’t have the ability to turn the camera on ourselves so easily.

I found a photo program with filters that I feel really bring back that time and make everything look so much more…I don’t know…important and just for that moment!

I don’t know if you will like it but here we go.

Wednesday night at Legendary Bingo we had a special guest “drag queen.” The amazing Miss Deven Green! It was a fun night- at least myself and 150 (per show) other people did.

Take a look at this-

Cool shot yes? Looks like a Fellini film! In fact, let’s give it some subtitles!

In the event that you do not speak Fellini french- it means “Bingo gives me feelings!”

On the same night, we had guests from across the pond- specifically the UK (they said they came all the way over here just to come to bingo!) and they wisely decided to take home “Drag Queen Bingo: The Home Game” so that they could play and play all day in their “flat.”

The warm orange tones remind me of the 1960’s- maybe a young British couple just out of Oxford (or whatever colleges they have there) and exploring the world before he has to begin work at her father’s shoe factory in downtown, um…Notting Hill.

She’s just a girl standing in front of a guy….

Now as I said, Deven was the host and she is not a drag queen per se, however…I believe we gave a great show.

Well not according to one woman who posted on Yelp the next day something like ” I went to drag queen bingo and there was no drag queen! They were not funny and it was like they were the ‘B team’ or someone dressed up their Aunt Lucille.” Whatever. I am sorry about the lack of drag queen but I hate labels anyway. And how dare you call me “B-team.”

It made me think however about other times when we did not have the usual “professional drag queen” at one of our events. I searched through old photos (actual photos that I have stored away) and found this one from about 17 years ago-

I honestly don’t remember how this happened but back then I only had one drag queen hostess and perhaps she was hungover. Or fell over. I don’t know. I am pretty sure these two were pretty bad but still. They called numbers and people won.

It happened again a few years later and I am pretty sure that every drag queen in the world was booked because this is what happened on that night-

Yes, that is me. And actor Lee Reherman. And this is how we did drag on that night. And damn it- we were @#$!%?! funny!

I only wish I could find the photo of the night Willam did not show up and I performed by myself with a wig on a stand in the next seat. Perhaps Yelp did not exist then because I did not hear of any complaints.

So to the Yelp lady- I am sorry that Deven reminds you of your aunt Lucille. You should feel lucky that you have an aunt who is brilliant, funny and beautiful.

On Thursday night, Deven and I performed our bingo magic for about 600 people at Americana At Brand- our biggest crowd yet! And no bad Yelps! Yet.

We had a few birthdays in the crowd and Deven took a photo with one of the birthday gals, Jody.

That photo looks like it was taken in Germany in the 1930’s during the war at a rally for the brave American troops. Or maybe in someone’s backyard in Torrance. Either way.

And finally, here is Deven and I looking down at all of the little people from our lofty position on stage at Americana-

Deven is saying “don’t be concerned with the bad Yelp lady. We are aglow with the spirit of bingo and our balls cannot be questioned as they roll around in the bingo cage we call life.”

And I am thinking “What?”

GREAT NEWS!

Our special guest for the 7 pm show at mary’s on Wednesday night isJOLENE PURDY!

Don’t recognize her? Well how about this?

She played Piper’s “bodyguard” on the latest season of “Orange Is The New Black”! She was also great in “Under The Dome” and “Glee” and one of my favorite films of all time “Donnie Darko” with Jake Gyllenhaal!

Come and see her and maybe she will be your bodyguard too!

AMERICANA AT BRAND- ONE MORE NIGHT!
